Network Security Research Project
Advanced traffic analysis through custom router firmware modification and monitoring.
The Challenge
Understanding network vulnerabilities and how malicious actors could exploit router firmware for eavesdropping or man-in-the-middle attacks in a controlled, ethical environment.
Key Constraints
- Learned the importance of authorization and ethical boundaries in security research
- Gained hands-on experience with embedded systems security
- Developed advanced skills in packet capture and analysis using Wireshark
Our Solution
Our team ethically modified a router's firmware, replacing it with open-source Tomato Firmware to gain low-level control. We configured it as a transparent proxy in an isolated university lab to monitor and analyze network traffic patterns with oversight from the IT department.
Innovative Approaches
- Tomato Firmware
- Wireshark
- tcpdump
- Ethical Hacking
